Social Justice, Basic Rights and Public Policies (2012-)

com Carlos Dimas Ribeiro

This is an interdisciplinary and inter-institutional project that involves researchers focused on researching public policies that promote social and environmental justice and the effective implementation of basic rights, referring to both human beings and non-human animals. The project has professors from UFRJ, UERJ, FIOCRUZ and UFF and foreign professors, thus establishing a partnership between PPGBIOS and its home universities.

In addition to a theoretical approach to the proposed themes, which provides for seminars, study groups and thematic workshops, the group also develops extension activities associated with the Social Inclusion Center (NIS) which provides mini-courses offered in communities, activities to promote citizenship, held in public squares, film screenings, production of booklets, activities in schools and health units.

Perspective of Functionings: Theory and Practice (2015-)

com Alexandre da Silva Costa

The group brought together researchers from different areas who have carried out research of a theoretical and practical nature, adopting as a paradigm the perspective of functionings, developed by M. C. Dias. Through the application of the functionings perspective, the group aims to provide an instrument that allows a better guarantee of equal consideration or moral respect between different individuals, whether they are human beings or not. Here we highlight its application in the fields of health, education, issues concerning the use of technology for human improvement, issues related to gender, identity policies and reparation policies, and animal and environmental ethics.
